Presidential Election Results Posted in Law Digest, Can be Challenged Wednesday

Prague, Jan 30 (CTK) – The Czech presidential election results were promulgated in the Digest of Laws today and they can be challenged in the Supreme Administrative Court as of Wednesday.

According to the results, incumbent President Milos Zeman won the election, beating academic Jiri Drahos in the second round.

Zeman gained 2.85 million votes (51.36 percent), while Drahos got 2.7 million votes (48.63 percent). A total of 5,554,596 voters cast valid ballots out of the 5,569,665 who took part in the runoff on January 26-27.

A total of 8.34 million eligible voters in the Czech Republic with a population of 10.5 million could take part in the election.

As far as the first election round is concerned, the State Election Commission only stated in the Law Digest that none of the nine candidates had been elected in it.

Each candidate must release a report on his election campaign funding on his election website within 90 days and send the final account to the Office Supervising the Financing of Political Parties and Movements by the end of April.

Complaints against the presidential election can be filed with the Supreme Administrative Court within a seven-day deadline that expires on February 6. The court must decide on all submitted proposals within 15 days since their delivery, that is by February 22.

Complaints can be filed by voters as well as the lawmakers who nominated some of the presidential candidates.

They can question the course of both the first round held two weeks ago and the weekend runoff vote. The reason for a complaint should be such a violation of the rules set be the election law that might influence the election of head of state.
