Unemployment Lowest in 20 Years

Prague, Dec 8 (CTK) – The unemployment rate in the Czech Republic dropped to 3.5 percent in November from 3.6 percent in October, with the number of job seekers falling to 265,469 people, the lowest figure since November 1997, the Employment Office said today.

At the same time, the number of vacancies increased by almost 4,000 mth/mth to 213,790. In year-on-year comparison, the number rose by nearly 78,500.

The Plzen Region registered the lowest unemployment rate again, reporting 2.3 percent, while the Moravia-Silesia Region had the highest rate of 5.4 percent.

In terms of districts, the lowest jobless rate was registered in the Rychnov nad Kneznou district (1.2 percent), and the highest was in the Karvina district (8.1 percent).

There were an average of 1.2 job applicants per vacancy in the Czech Republic, with the Karvina district registering the highest number of 8.8 job seekers per vacancy. In contrast, the Pardubice district and the Prague-East district recorded mere 0.2 job seekers per vacancy.

The situation on the labour market keeps to be influenced by the favourable condition of the domestic economy. There is still demand for new employees, particularly in technical and blue-collar jobs, with companies having difficulties finding qualified employees, according to the Employment Office.

The percentage of unemployed people who are without a job for longer than a year dropped to 36.4 percent in November from last year’s 40.3 percent.
