Babis Pledges To Meet Zeman’s June Deadline

Andrej Babis and Milos Zeman

Prague, May 30 (CTK) – Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis (ANO) wants to present the new cabinet line-up proposal to President Milos Zeman as soon as possible and he is to discuss the timelines regarding the new cabinet with him during their meeting in Lany on Thursday, he said today.

“Of course, we will be discussing the situation regarding the cabinet, referendum and confidence [vote],” Babis said referring to his appointment as prime minister.

“The president set a deadline by the end of June and I want to uphold it,” he said.

Zeman promised he would appoint Babis as prime minister for the second time yet before the release of the results of the planned intra-party referendum of Social Democrats (CSSD) on entering the cabinet with ANO, that is before June 15.

Zeman said on Czech Television (CT) he wanted to speed up the forming of the cabinet by this step, which he deemed to be pressuring both CSSD and Babis.

Zeman also said last week that he was considering attending the Chamber of Deputies session before the confidence vote like he had done during the first confidence vote, which Babis’s cabinet lost.

The president expects the CSSD referendum to support the party’s participation in a cabinet with ANO, but he is also prepared to deal with its possible negative standpoint.

“I have prepared a plan B, but I will first discuss it with Andrej Babis,” Zeman added.

By plan B, Zeman does not point to an early election, which he is not in favour of and has called it a plan C.

He has been supporting either a coalition of the CSSD and ANO with the support of Communists, or the cooperation of ANO, Communists and the Freedom and Direct Democracy (SPD) movement.
