Babis Rules In Resignation Longer Than Any Previous Government

Prague, July 8 (CTK) – This is an overview of the time elapsed between the elections to the Chamber of Deputies and the confidence vote in the new government (the lower house will hold a confidence vote in the minority cabinet of Prime Minister Andrej Babis’ ANO and the Social Democrats on July 11):

 

1996 – 54 days

 

  • The election was held on May 31 and June 1, Vaclav Klaus (Civic Democratic Party, ODS) was reappointed as prime minister along with the coalition cabinet on July 4. The Chamber of Deputies expressed confidence in the government on July 25, 1996.

 

1998 – 60 days

 

  • The election was held on June 19 and 20, Social Democrat (CSSD) leader Milos Zeman was appointed the prime minister on July 17 and his minority government of the Social Democrats on July 22. The Chamber of Deputies voiced confidence in the government on August 19, 1998.

 

2002 – 53 days

 

  • The election was held on June 14 and 15, CSSD leader Vladimir Spidla was appointed the prime minister on July 12, his coalition government gained the confidence of the Chamber of Deputies on August 7, 2002.

 

2006-2007 – 230 days

 

  • The election was held on June 2 and 3, ODS leader Mirek Topolanek was appointed the prime minister on August 16 and his minority cabinet of the ODS (which did not gain the confidence of the lower house on October 3) on September 4, 2006. Topolanek was appointed the prime minister for the second time on November 8 and his coalition government on January 9, 2007. The Chamber of Deputies expressed confidence in it on January 19, 2007.

 

2010 – 73 days

  • The election was held on May 28 and 29, the ODS leader, Petr Necas, was appointed the prime minister on June 28, his coalition government on July 13. The lower house voiced confidence in the cabinet on August 10, 2010.

 

2014 – 115 days

 

  • The election was held on October 25 and 26. CSSD leader Bohuslav Sobotka was appointed the prime minister on January 17, 2014, his coalition cabinet on January 29, 2014. The lower house expressed confidence in his government on February 18, 2014.

 

2018 – so far 263 days

 

  • The election was held on October 20 and 21, 2017, ANO leader Andrej Babis was appointed the prime minister on December 6, his minority one-colour government on December 13, 2017. The Chamber of Deputies did not express confidence in the cabinet on January 16, 2018. President Milos Zeman named Babis again as the prime minister on June 6, and his second government on June 27.
