Communists (KSCM) – Can’t Support Babis’s Minority Government

Prague, Dec 20 (CTK) – The Communists (KSCM) will decide on January 9, a day before the confidence vote in the lower house, whether they will tolerate the minority ANO cabinet, KSCM head Vojtech Filip said after a meeting with ANO today.

KSCM has reservations about the cabinet’s policy statement draft, although it agrees with ANO on some points.

Filip refused to associate his party’s possible support for the cabinet with the appointment of Zdenek Ondracek (KSCM) as the head of the parliamentary commission supervising the General Inspection of Security Forces (GIBS).

Filip said that direct support for the cabinet was ruled out by the substantial differences both parties have regarding the domain of security.

“The crucial thing which was mentioned is that we will provide our comments (on the policy statement) and they will address our priorities,” Filip said.

According to Filip, KSCM is hoping that the current policy statement really is a draft only and that it is not final.

He said some points were not clearly worded in the statement and were rather superficial.

Both negotiation teams agreed to continue mutual talks, he said.

KSCM’s Executive Committee, which is to deal with the decision on the party’s stance in the confidence vote, is meeting on January 9 and the vote will take place the next day.

After the general election, KSCM presented several conditions that need to be met in order for it to tolerate the cabinet, which included a general referendum bill.

“There is no referendum in the policy statement, but ANO is willing to discuss it. However, we have found agreement on protection of raw materials and mineral assets,” he said.
