Women’s Movements Head To Elections

Prague, Aug 25 (CTK) – Some purely women’s movements are heading to the Czech October local elections, daily Lidove noviny (LN) writes today.

A number of women-only political groups are running in the local elections.

For instance, the Women 2018 group running in Kanice, Brno-country district, was formed a few months ago and its members are running together in the elections for the first time.

Another association, the mothers of Zlutice in the Karlovy Vary district, has been working for 15 years, mainly organising events for children. Now they want to promote culture and other causes, LN writes.

“This has a tradition in Heralec. These types of lists of candidates are a good choice if you are not politically profiled or do not take side of anyone in particular,” Alexandra Kasperova, from Heralec, Vysocina Region, is quoted by the LN as saying.

Purely women’s lists of candidates are becoming a trend across the Czech regions, LN notes, citing numerous further examples.

Since 1998, when there were 25.76 percent of women running in all local municipalities, their share has risen to 32.22 percent in 2014 and 38.11 percent in 2018, LN writes.
