The Slovak Constitutional Court has banned the holding of a referendum on calling early elections, the announcement of which was requested by a petition of over 585,000 Slovaks. It follows from today’s court verdict. At the instigation of President Zuzana Čaputová, the constitutional judges considered the referendum and concluded that it was not in accordance with the constitution. The chairman of the court, Ivan Fiačan, told the press. According to the law, the aforementioned referendum cannot be announced.
According to Fiačan, a referendum on shortening the election period would circumvent the established rules of functioning of the parliament and violate the method of division of power.
