Former President Vaclav Klaus, an outspoken opponent of wearing face coverings and other anti-covid restrictions, has tested positive for covid-19.
A spokesperson said that Klaus was lecturing today for students of the University of Economics. He did not feel well during the lecture. He, therefore, went for tests, which subsequently turned out to be positive. He consequently returned for examination to the Central Military Hospital, from where he then went home for treatment.
The former president has repeatedly spoken out against government measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus. He also stated publicly that he would not be vaccinated against covid-19. The current president, Miloš Zeman, called for his vaccination. “Get vaccinated, Václav or you risk at your age that covid will catch up with you,” he said.
Klaus performed several times in public without a veil or other face protection. At the end of January, he received a fine of 10,000 crowns from the Prague Hygiene Station due to a blind performance in front of the Municipal House in Prague in October. He objected to the decision.
In January, he took part in a protest in Old Town Square, where there were several thousand people. Among other things, he took photographs with other participants in the demonstration without a veil. He said at the time that “one-way dictation from the government must stop.” “We want to tell the government and say it clearly and unequivocally: that has been enough. There have been enough of all the prohibitions and orders that are fundamentally damaging our lives,” he said. “There is no miracle vaccine. Vaccination must not be mandatory,” he added at the time.
